I tried ResQ and it only cloned what appeared like a blank disk

THen I tired Norton DiskDoctor and it gave me back files with names
full of dollar signs

It was for IRISPEN - I bought a used 1997 version but
my folks were dying on me and i only recently got to set it
up. (Now that I need it more and can least afford a new one.)

Basically the first setup floppy

But the vendor just told me "Buy a new one"

What are you talking about !

You don't read and reply to your "other" posts and this post makes no sense.

Whatever the problem is...
I agree with the vendor just "Buy a new one" !

I have a flopyy which isn't read by any PC

It has a driver for some used hardware.

I tried ResQ on recommendaton from USENET
It only cloned the disk

Norton Disk Doctor couldn't fix the Partition Table.

So ? Its a bad floppy and is unrecoverable.

Get a replacemnt floppy or look for a download on the internet for this unidentified
hardware.

I've never heard of a floppy diskette with a partition table.

To dump the boot sector you could use Debug from the DOS prompt, as
described in this post:

FWIW, this is what my Win98SE startup diskette's boot sector looks
like. Note that I have taken the liberty of editing the output for
clarity. Among other things, you can see an "OEM name" (MSWIN4.0), the
serial number at offsets 127-12A (18E6-3915), file system (FAT12), and
media descriptor byte at offset 115 (F0 = 1.44MB). If you can post
your own boot sector, perhaps someone could analyse it or at least
identify it.

Otherwise this may help you:

I'm baffled. I never had anything like this before.

But Norton did get the files back, without names.
(ie with $ in the names for unknown characters)

I can't believe irislink.com (Irispen 3.0 1997 OCR pen scanner is the
hardware in question) wouldn't try to get me a new diskette.

It sounds like your directory structure was damaged, or simply that
the files had been deleted. In the latter case the first character of
the 8.3 name of a deleted file would have been replaced with an "E5"
byte. Otherwise, if a recovered file has more than one unknown
character, then I'd suspect there was a problem with the directory.

FYI, you can view the first sector of the root directory using Debug
as follows (I'm assuming there are two 9-sector FATs):

C:\WINDOWS>debug
-L 100 0 13 1
-d 100 2ff

<sector dump appears here>

-q

I'd use Norton Disk Doctor as a last resort. I've experienced cases
where it has trashed an otherwise recoverable diskette. If you're not
comfortable with Debug, I'd use Norton's Diskedit to view the
structure of the diskette. Try the debug routine on your
write-protected cloned copy.

BTW, you may have been able to use the DOS Diskcopy command to
duplicate your diskette.

>I can't believe irislink.com (Irispen 3.0 1997 OCR pen scanner is the

I share your annoyance. OK, so the product is 8 years old, but how
much shelf space does a diskette occupy? Surely IRIS wouldn't toss out
their old IP? Then again, maybe the latest software is backward
compatible?
