Do you guys what industry standard software is used to make fonts?

What kind of "fonts"? Also keep in mind that most fonts are copyrighted works, in the same way as software, movies and paintings.
Computer - TrueType, PostScript, OpenType, raster?
Old-school typesetter' lead fonts?
What you actually need?
