Forced rebuild using A8V deluxe

My old Gateway system died. Since it was a backup I am going to rebuild it using a Asus A8V Deluxe that was given to me. If possible I plan on reutilizing everything possible (except mobo, cpu and mem). What is best cpu to go with, venice core 3000+ @ $156? How about memmory? I have match generic sticks 3200 ( 2 X 256) from an upgrade I did. I am not initially going to overclock, but may get tempted down the road. Any and all suggestions welcomed.

2X512 seems the optimal configuration, because 1G is enough right now and it won't empty your wallet. Say how much do you want to spend in RAM and the wiser guys can give you some suggestions on RAM with OC potential.

Money is a problem, so I want to utilize the gateway case (a full tower) and if possible its' power supply. I would rather put the money in the cpu and cooling fan if I do not buy a retail box cpu. While 1gb mem is fine the generic dual channel 2 x 256 I have may have to suffice for the first go around.

How powerful is the gateway PSU? (or, what's the old system specs?)

The 3000+ is a good chip for the price. Your generic ram will probably work, but some people have reported A64's not liking high-latency RAM. I guess the only way to be sure is try it and find out.

If the Gateway isn't too old, that PSU should power the new stuff adequately, if it's a really old gateway (say, Pentium II era), the PSU may be a bit weak.

While the Venice may be nice, it is priced higher than the Winchester core. So you say you be overclocking, then if you want to save, get the Winchester. The retail version has a fan and it is suitable enough for normal use and mild overclocking. Unless you want a highly silent PC, the gettng an OEM and a fan is not more economical. High latency RAM will work with your board.. but it will work a bit slower. But you may not notice it, so your generic RAM is ok. My advice, get a boxed winchester and keep you ram but get a good PSU. If it is anything less than good quality 300w, you'll likely to run into problem. You would rather put the money in the cpu and cooling fan? I would rather make sure the PSU is up to the task and spend the rest on the retail CPU.. An unstable fast computer is no better than a slower stable computer.

OK, think I will spend a little more time checking out the power requirments and the Gateway PSU I have. Does anyone have any specific thoughts on the full tower Gateway case (about 5 years old)? It certainly has alot of room and places for additional cooling fans. Should the A8V delux board fit easily? Any toughts welcomed!
