I've been having problems with my computer (shutting down with increasingly reguarity until recently where it won't stay on for longer than 10 minutes at a stretch) in the last month. I've highly suspected that it was my PSU and so today I went to Best Buy and bought a 350w Antec model. I was extremely happy to see that it slid into the chassis perfectly except that in my computer case (a 6 year old GatewaY) there is a green plastic device that pushes up against the PSU to lock it in. It turns out that this new PSU is too long to work with this device. I can get the green thing to awkwardly latch onto the end of the PSU by pulling it down and back, but this is not how it was intended to work and it doesn't seem secure or stable.

My question is, what can I do to keep the PSU in place? Electrical tape maybe? That's my best guess, taping the unit in place.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? What do you guys think I should do? If you can, I'd like an answer soon because I'm planning on returning the PSU tonight, before I go home from college, if nothing can be done with it.

All PSUs I know of have 4 screw holes to attach it to the back panel of the case. Maybe drill a hole in the panel to screw it in instead of using the clip?

Don't know the internals of that case - I have an old Gateway (6 yrs old - a GP6) but its a tower and the PSU screws in - of course, the screw holes aren't lined up right for a standard PSU, but a drill can fix that easily.

If anything, using electrical tape is a way to go. Just be sure not to block the vents. What I've done before it use a flexible metal strap material and run it underneath the PSU and screw it to the top of the case. It looks better than electrical tape and often times, you can't really see it. Additionally, if you get it tight enough, you won't have to worry about it sliding around at all and you can run one from front to back if need be. Just a thought. I would advise against drilling holes into the PSU itself as you just might hit something. Sure would hate to see that Antec PSU get damaged. 8O
De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da, that's all I want to say to you ....

Agreed. Just for clarification - I suggest drilling in the case's back panel to fit the screw holes already in the PSU itself.

Thanks for your help so far. The holes drilled into the back panel do not match up with the holes on the PSU unfortunately. I also lack a drill so making holes myself is out of the question. I think I'm going to try for tape though I don't have any electrical around at the moment. Will duct tape work fine?

BTW, everyone whose responded has been very helpful. This really seems to be a great forum. Thanks again!
