Forgot cpu on overclock

So yeah, I don't even know how it's possible but I turned some settings in bios to overclock it like 5 months ago. Now I started thinking why it's running so hot everytime, then I realized it's overclocking everytime. Now it's 4,5ghz when it's normal 4,0ghz. Is there any option to go back on 4.0ghz? Too hot atm for cooler!

CPU: Amd fx-8350
Temps: 59C on idle, 71C on gaming

Solution
What settings? Just change the multiplier back to x40. Also turn down vcore voltage to say 1.25-1.3v if you increased it. If it was an auto OC feature turn it off. Or just reset the BIOS to default.

I would clear CMOS and try to overclock the chip again. FX is well known for being a great overclocker, a good chip can easily hit 5ghz with a good board. If it's running hot then try turning down the core voltage to 1.3v or lower like 1.25v, this will make a pretty big difference. Also, 71c while gaming isn't actually that bad of a temp for an overclocked 8 core CPU under a gaming load, especially with the chip at 4.5

Okay thank you dude. just reseted my bio to default and now back to 4ghz, didn't know it was so easy.

Also temps look good now on idle?

Stock cooler? That's warm for idle. If it's not exceeding 62-65c under load it should be fine.

Ahh, I forgot FX has some weird throttling issues, isn't that because of an offset and the chip isn't actually that temp?

Amd Wraith is my cooler. I don't know why it's still so high!

What happens when throttle? I guess my cpu has been about 60-70 for many months :D Don't see any performance issues tho.

It will lower clock speeds and/or voltages to stay cool. May not be noticeable if it's not to bad, the hotter the chip tries to get the more clocks will be reduced. Not exactly sure how FX CPU's go about throttling, but I think that's pretty much accurate.

I'm not sure about the offset thing. FX CPU's have always been weird about temps.

I believe the higher CPU temp is actually socket temp. Package temp is an average of core temps or something like that. You don't want to see either exceed 70c.

It's like 72 when playing, cant do anyhting for that. Amd wraith cooler is so BAD :fou:

AMD set on core thermal limits for any of the FX cpus is 62°C. However, since you can't read actual on core temps (there's no thermal strip actually in the cores like Intel uses, you have to rely on an algorithm temp, package temp etc for anything realistic and even that's a guess. The only reliable way to temp an FX is to use thermal margins, not software read temps as this allows the cpu to read and measure itself, not you or software taking a stab at what's decent or not. If you can keep thermal margins larger than 20, you are good. At 10-20 you are pushing it, might look into adjustments or better cooling. At 0-10, you really need to back something down and/or seriously consider better cooling. At 0 or negative numbers, turn the pc off before you cook the cores.

The wraith cooler isn't designed for an FX chip, especially not the 8350. The cooler isn't bad, just bad for that CPU. Also, to clarify the thermal throttling issue above, thermal throttling happens when a CPU (or GPU) hits temperatures too high to run at over a long period of time, so the BIOS will turn down the clock speed and voltages of the CPU to try and lower temps, as well as ramp up the fan speed. If the chip gets too hot, around 100c, and it can't get it to cool down any more then the system will shut itself off. You'll usually hear a click when this happens. I would recommend you get a new cooler, like a Hyper 212 Evo, there fairly cheap and it can handle some overclocking on that chip. Also, you could check the thermal paste between the CPU and cooler to make sure its not bad.
