Format not supported by this device

I have been trying to configure my 2.1 speaker system from 7.1 to stereo in order to hear all in game volume when
playing video games.

However, i cannot play back a test and when i go to finish the configuration a message comes back stating 'format not supported by this device'.

I am now stuck on what to do.

*update* recently checked and all drivers are up to date, still have the issue of putting it to a 2.1 system.

-The speakers are Harmon Kardon soundsticks III
-the sound card is Sound blaster X-Fi Xtreme audio
i connected the speakers through a 3.5 mm audio jack (cable supplied by company) to the sound card.

MP3 files play fine as does music played through other software like spotify. Everything seems in order but i still cant change the configuration

is it inside the green connection of the sound card?

Run the X-fi app as admin
