Format problem

my SDHC memory card(chip) is giving problems, whenever i connected my sdhc card to the computer with a card reader, it told,"you have to format your chip for further use". but i was trying to format it told,"windows was unable to format". my chip is media 4gb. and my operating system is windows 7 (ultimate). please help me. i dont want to throw my 4gb chip in the garbage. i also tried with SD formatter but it told."your memory card is write-protected, please your write-protect switch."but there is no switch in my card reader. please help me.

Check for the slider switch to turn off the write protection on the card.
