Formatting External HDD for backup

Hey guys. I just got a G-Drive Mobile 1 TB external drive. I am trying to use it as a backup drive but Windows does not seem to allow me. Is there a specific way I should do it? I have followed some instruction online but no dice in success. Does anyone have a step by step that they can offer to get this squared away? Any help would be appreciated. Also I am using Windows 10.

What is Windows doing that'll not allow you? Should just be a matter of format/assign a drive letter & off you go.

The main drive is gray and will not allow me to format it.

Could you post a screenshot? Do you have the option to assign a drive letter?
