Hi, I've been trying to format my 2nd hard disk (E drive because my DVD RW is taking up the D drive) and it hasn't been going well. I've been able to do a quick format but for some strange reason it wont let me put files in. For example, I tried downloading something into the drive, which is lets say 9gb; it'll go until around 500 mb then completely stop and never start up again. Same thing happened when I tried to put in a music folder from my external hdd (was about 900 mb); it went about halfway and progress just stopped.

Now I've tried doing the long format (leaving quick format and the file compression ticks off) and i suspect it doesn't work. it just says "formatting" on disk management. Mind you my pc has been on for about 30 hours at this point.

Any help would be appreciated 🙁.

P.S. After the quick format I checked the disk for errors and it detected no problems on the drive.

Hi wcccmh,

A couple of questions to get a bit more specific information:

-What type of drive is it (make/model)? How old is it?
-What formatting software are you using (or are you doing it through Window's Device Manager)?
-What did you use to check the disk's integrity?

I'm not completely sure about the make and model; but the driver is :ST500DM0 02 -1BD142 SATA DISK DEVICE.

It's about 6 months old, so fairly new.

I just used disk management to try and format the hard disk.

And all I did was check the disk for errors, in which it found none.
