I originally had windows xp on my desktop, then upgraded to vista but didn't format my hard drive whilst doing so. i now want xp back temporarily as my sound card doesn't work with vista but every time i try to boot the xp cd it comes up with "an unknown hard error" and wont let me go any further, vista also wont let me format the hardrive because the desktop is running and ive lost my original disc, is there anyway i could go about formatting the hardrive so i can re-install windows xp?

Why not try to resolve the sound card issue, have you tried to find Vista drivers for it?
"want xp back temporarily" that indicates that you want Vista back, but you say you don't have the disk "ive lost my original disc" so how will you reinstall Vista.
