Hi! So i got a gtx 1060, 60hz monitor and an old i5 650 cpu and im playing gta v. My game just runs about 60 fps max and sometimes drops to 30 (and its on low settings). Ive done the following:

  1. Tried to change the settings in game as well as in the nvidia panel.
  2. Tried to overclock my gpu, but it seems like its still the same.
  3. Tried to overclock my old monitor, it goes up to 70hz using the nvidia panel but at the center it got a message saying input out of range and it cannot be removed unless i return it to 60hz.

So is my cpu bottlenecking my gpu? Or its just i got a 60hz monitor?

Agree I would expect the CPU is limiting performance. When you are limited by the CPU there is nothing you can do.

FYI changing the monitor Hz will only impact FPS if you are using V-Sync or other artificial FPS limiter linked to your monitor refresh rate. Without an artificial limiter the monitor Hz cannot impact your FPS.

But i see someone using same specs as mine, but got a better fps results. They got 16gb ram and i only got like 12.

Yes, that may be, but unless you are sure of what in game settings the other person was using, that's like comparing an apple to an orange.

There is very little by way of improvements you can make for better FPS, the only real way is to upgrade your base system. Adding more ram will not help in this case. Not even faster ram would help.

I'd recommend you save a few quid (about 400$) and get a new base mobo, CPU, ram, and possibly PSU. Stick that with your GTX1060 and you have a solid 1080p 60-75hz gaming system.

Something like this would be a great start:
