Hi there,
I have had an issue for a little while about my FPS dropping in games because my GPU usage would drop as well. For example, let's say I was playing a game and I would be getting 98-99% GPU usage and a nice framerate, then BAM--my GPU usage drops--sometimes from anywhere to 66% to 40% to even 2%. Now after a while, my usage goes back up to the high nineties and my steady FPS rate returns. I am monitoring with MSI afterburner with CPU usage, GPU usage and both temperatures. I have scoured these forums trying to find a solution to no avail.
If it helps, my specs are
Mobo: Asus m5a97 r2.0 le
Cpu: AMD fx-8350 at 4.0ghz (not overclocked)
cpu cooler: corsair h100i gtx
GPU: EVGA gtx 780 sc
RAM: 8gb crucial ballistix tactical lp
and several hdds and one ssd.
This has occurred in several games and happens a little while after I initially boot up a game and play it for a little while. I first noticed this while playing Battlefield 3, and have since played BF4, Battlefront, Ryse, Evolve, and Doom.
I know for a fact this issue has not always happened so I am pretty sure it is not due to a faulty CPU/MOBO combo unless one or both has crapped out recently for some reason. I initially suspected a GPU temperature bottleneck, however my cpu is not overclocked and I have a solid liquid cooler, which is honestly somewhat overkill since I am not even overclocking (I know AMD cpus have a reputation for getting hot).
I monitor my GPU temperature in case of a bottleneck as well, but it never goes over 74 degrees or so, which EVGA says is the operating temp of the card at load. I have several decent corsair fans inside my case (NZXT H440) so I do not think it is a cooling issue.
I have updated my drivers from nvidia's website, and nothing helped my fps drops.
Any help would be greatly appreciated so I can return to gaming with stable framerates!
EDIT: Here is a brief list of some of the steps I have taken to try to correct my issue
-reinstalled nvidia video drivers
-unplugged/replugged and secured the pins from PSU into GPU to make sure it is not a faulty connection problem
-increased voltage of GPU in case of voltage error in EVGA precisionX
-ran all fans at 100% including CPU cooling fans on the radiator of my water cooler in case it is a CPU cooling issue
-ran and used driver booster to update/install drivers that were out of date
-I do not have another Mobo or cpu to test out with my GPU to try to isolate the problem, so I am hoping the issue does not lie in the actual hardware.
