Question FPS drops, is my CPU the issue?

Hello!

I have regular FPS drops across multiple games: Fortnite, League of Legends & Shadow Of Mordor.

I ran a UserBenchmark (https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/16283366) and I think I'd be right in saying my CPU is not running as expected?

Here's my loadout:
Intel Core i7-2600
Nvidia GTX 1050-Ti
16GB ram
Intel DQ77MK motherboard
1TB SSD

I get drops on most Fortnite specifically at 60fps on low settings, any ideas what the cause is or how I can fix it?

I've re-installed windows, updated my drivers, removed a lot of other programs off my PC and don't have any other programs running in the background.

Not sure if it's relevant, but I do have quite a few USBs plugged in, would that slow down anything?

Thank you!

Have you checked temperatures to see if you are throttling at all? Are you using the stock intel cooler?
Your RAM is also low speed which can affect minimum framerates badly and thesew titles are quite modern.

CPU min: 38 max: 47
GPU min: 26 max; 48

I don't think it's throttling, but yeah I'm use the stock intel cooler.

Okay thanks, I'll look at getting some new RAM and hope that leads to some kind of improvement :)

If it’s not throttling I don’t see quite why it would bench quite so low, but I am not surprised so much that modern games are giving you dips. Is your cpu hitting 100% load during gaming?

For some reason your cpu is under performing quite badly. I would check your bios and see what is going on with the multiplier, etc. You can upgrade your memory to 1600 for about $65. And your hd is very slow causing slow load in times. But the bottom line here is I believe something is wrong with your cpu performance. 1 percentile is a sign of trouble. The 2600 can game with those but your cpu is holding you back. Troubleshoot it.

Not all the time, but yeah it does hit it occasionally.

When I look in task manager performance, it says my CPU utilisation and the speed as 1.6 GHZ when it should be around 3.4, could that be an issue too?

Okay great, I'll check that out now too and look at upgrading my memory and HD.

Thank you!

Not much difference between 1333MHz and 1600MHz ram, definitely not worth spending $65 on that upgrade.

26% background tasks? That's considerable. I'd be looking into what's jacking up usage. Apart from all that program dumping, have you also used ccleaner (default settings) and it's registry cleaner to run through and remove all the orphans and junk left behind after deletes. Run malwarebytes and anti-virus etc

Your cpu is only using 14% of its power so to speak during this process so it doesn't need to ramp up to 3.4. Run a benchmarking program to stress test it and see where it goes.

So I've used Ccleaner, registry cleaner, run malwarebytes and anti-virus says there's nothing around.

In terms of BIOS what should I be looking for? I saw my speed was at 3.3 but I'm assuming that's not the major problem.

I'll run the game for half hour or so with Task Manager & HWmonitor open and report back with my findings!

Thanks for the help so far!

Somehow your cpu is not even reaching is base clocks. Best check your bios settings, preferably restore the defaults.

Reasons for that also could be thermal throttling on the cpu/vrm's. You could monitor the temperatures and clocks using hwinfo64 when stressing the cpu.

Edit: Use cpu-z for stressing the cpu. You can find the test in the "bench" tab.

I went in to my BIOs and reset everything to default, the went in to CPU-z and got this back from benching:

It does look like only a couple of the multipliers are working. Doing the stress test now!

looks to me like he has his cpu in low power mode. in none of his screen caps does it show more than x16 multi.
go into bios and load system default settings. then set your ram to 1333 cas 9 (with appropriate voltages used).
set your boot order
open the cpu timings screen and make sure your set to the cpu multiplier to 38 if its set to anything other.
enable cpu turboboost if disabled
save this profile as your defualt...
and restart...

then go into windows power options and use max performance...
then run your benches again...
because that cpu should be in the 80%tile and its down in the 40's

Thank you for this, I tried to follow the steps as best as I could.

In my BIOS, I found this option greyed out:

Intel Dynamic Power technology that's set to Energy Efficient Performance, could this be the issue? I actually couldn't change it for some reason.

Also looking in my processor overrides, I got this, which would make me think the issue isn't in BIOS?

I honestly have no idea!

Go to performance section and see if there is a return to default settings. This pic shows that the default settings for performance would be the best setting for your processor. And while you are at it make sure you are using your gpu and not your on board graphics while gaming.
