[SOLVED] FPS Drops On Gaming PC

Hey All,

I've been experiencing some FPS drops on my gaming PC which are quite strange given my specs are relatively decent. I've been experiencing the issue for about a month or so and I have had the PC for 9 months. I only play League Of Legends on very low to low settings and cap my fps to 200. During teamfights the fps drops down to <100 which was not happening when I first received the PC. Here are my specs:

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X Processor
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 8GB LHR Graphics Card
RAM: 16GB [3200MHz] DDR4 RAM (2 x 8GB Modules)
Motherboard: Gigabyte B550M DS3H [M-ATX] Motherboard
SSD: 500GB NVMe M.2 Solid State Drive (games are saved here and have plenty of space)

I have tried the following:
  • Closing all background apps whilst gaming
  • Updating all GPU drivers via GeForce Experience. I'm not sure if I need to update any other drivers?
  • Adjusting in game settings so anything that can impact performance is off e.g. anti-aliasing & vsync
When I uncap the fps and leave the game idle, it hovers around the 400-550 fps mark. I have also tried running a User Benchmark which seemed to be fine, here are the results: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/56739346

I'm not too knowledgeable about resolving these issues so any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey there,

You've a similar system to my own.

Could be a couple of issues at play. A recent MS update for Windows has caused issues for some. The advice is to uninstall Geforce Experience (which I won't use myself as I think it's garbage).

What power plan are you running? It should be Ryzen Balanced.

I'd uninstall the GPU drivers with DDU, just to do a clean install.

What bios are you running? There is a stutter bug with earlier bios up to AGESA 1.2.0.3. So updating the bios may help here. Just remember to clear CMOS afterwards.

Try some of those, and let us know.

Thanks for the suggestions! Will give these a go and test intermittently. I'll come back with results :)

Hey there, I've given the first two suggestions a try. For some reason I do not have a 'Ryzen Balanced' option showing up despite installing the relevant AMD chipset driver. So I have just left this on 'balanced' for now. I did go ahead and reinstall the GPU drivers and this seems to have made a big difference. I am no longer getting the huge drops, there is still a bit of stutter and small drops but they don't really affect gameplay so happy with this.

Thanks so much for the help! Much appreciated.

That Userbenchmark above shows an old bios, looking at what you said here did you not try and update that, is worth it to do.

BIOS Date20210708

Yeah I didn't actually update the BIOS, from what I understand clearing the CMOS involved actually physically taking the battery out. I'm pretty terrible with working with the physical insides of the PC, but will definitely figure out how to do it and get to it. Thank you for the suggestion!

Clearing cmos and updating bios are two different things, think you know it but want to clarify.

There are also two pins on the motherboard which you can short to do a clear cmos, the manual should have the info about which ones, just need to connect those two for about 5 seconds, pc still needs to be off the power.

I see, I thought it was just a part of updating the BIOS. Would it be necessary to clear CMOS or is it fine to just update the BIOS? Wouldn't want to risk causing any damage if just the BIOS update is necessary.

No damage comes from a clear cmos so it's up to you. I don't do it after a bios update, but someone else here swears by it, if you want to be thorough do the bios update, after that set optimal default values and after that enable XMP/DOCP.
You can of course check if the windows drive is still set as boot drive and maybe other things you in the past set to different values.
