Hello Everyone,

The games I run together are Dota 2 and Rocket League I like to play RL in between D2 games so I leave RL on in the background. When RL is on my fps from D2 goes from about 100 average to about 50 average.

My setup:

4690k Stock
Msi gaming 5 z97
8gb corsair vengence @ 1600
gtx 970 sli
rog swift 144hz 1440p monitor along side a 1200p monitor.

While gaming with both games on have about 70% cpu usage and 70% ram usage.

I'm wondering if I am being limited by my hardware or if i'm getting fps drops because of poor steam game utilization.

Do you have one game on on each monitor or do you just play on the 1440p one? you should have no problem gettin well over 100 fps in dota with your rig and leaving rocket league should have a big preformance impact. You can check you gpu usage in a oc programm like precision x

I play only on the 1440p monitor, roughly 70% gpu usage with both games on, when I wrote 50 average i was being generous, sometimes drops to 20.

They still take up resources, especially on the GPU as only one application can access it at a time. The GPU driver actually becomes a fairly significant bottleneck. And even at the main menu, the game still has to do potentially significant amounts of rendering, audio processing, and input handling. Finally, RAM/HDD comes into play, since page faults will occur more often due to having less free RAM.

How much help would adding ram do?

It would help decently, but only because you're trying to run two games at once. No single game really needs more than 8GBs currently.

Not sure; there are likely multiple bottlenecks, so I can't say for certain the be all end all fix for you is adding more RAM.
