Trust me when I say (I'm over 50 btw) that when it comes to First Person Shooters, the mouse/KB is the way to go.
I came from joystick and gamepads from back in the 80's with the first home consoles. I carried that on thru my
first home PC's (C=64, Amiga) all the way to Quake 3. I actually played Quake 2 online in a mod with a grapple to boot,
and I was using an 10 button Gravis Gamepad Pro.
It was a difficult hump to get over, but once you do, you'll never go back.. trust me.
The degree of control is night and day .
I still use a gamepad on my PC, but I like it mostly for fighting, racing, and sports games.

Hang in there young grasshopper
I would say its a case of just practice. In fps having all your options quickly available and accessible is an advantage and a keyboard does this best. You just need to practice so it becomes second nature without thinking.

A 'good' gaming keyboard with mechanical switches will be far more tactile and should be easier to use once you get used to it, however they are not cheap but for fps a really good investment
