I've seen some sites do some reviews on running games in both x64, vista, and 7 and have noticed that the fps isn't too far off in all of them respectively. I run counter strike source on x64 at max settings in nvidia control panel and average about 190fps. In windows 7 64bit, using the exact same nvidia override settings, I get only around 90-100fps on average. What is causing the drastic drop off? Any ideas? Both games are running on DX9.0c since CS:S doesn't support anything higher. I also have the latest drivers for both OS's.

Probably, but I wasn't sure if it was something else. I mean I've seen other benchmarks for other games where windows 7 is maybe 5% lower in fps, but not from 190 to 90, that's too much.

Does it REALLY matter? You're still getting an fps level that's probably considerably higher than your monitor can display anyway.

Anyway, there's any number of things that could cause it, and it's all down to the fact that Windows 7 isn't a 100% finished OS yet, and hasn't had the performance-increasing service packs that Vista has had. Your drivers mightn't be fully windows-7 ready, I know nvidia's drivers at the moment are more win7 compatible than win7 optimised.

The difference is it's an RC. After Windows 7 is released there will be optimized drivers as Kraynor said. After it's released then people should discuss benchmarks and issues with it.

Ok thx for the clarification everyone. I huess I was just put off by the results I've seen elsewhere showing the fps being very similar between xp, vista, and windows 7. Perhaps its a CS:S thing or even a DirectX 9.0c thing in Windows 7.
