Is it my imagination, or is the Prima Guide for FR/LG pretty much
useless? I bought it, because it was discounted with cartridge
purchase, but it tells me almost nothing. No move descriptions, no item
lists, nothing really other than a long listing of pokemon.

Are there other guides out there and are they worth the money?

In short form, yes (the Official Nintendo Guide)and yes.

I suggest checking your local Wal-Mart for one of them.
