Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

If you upgrade to Service Pack 3, you will be entitled to the free Microsoft Security Essentials along with another 108 critical updates since that Pack came out some years ago. Without that Pack you aren't supported by Microsoft any more so you don't get the up to date protection.

Even Avast and AVG free versions won't work as efficiently without SP3 as they might with it.
