I'm just looking for advice on what to use.

I was using WMP but it was causing problems with re-naming some of my files so I'm using VLC as a media player and I've disabled WMP.

So what else can I use that free and simple to use ?

It just needs to rip CD's but some of the tracks I won't need so I'd de-select them as I would in WMP.

Just saw that VLC rips CD!

<mod edit>

Can it be set to rip automatically ? VLC is quite an in depth program. I'd like to simply insert the disc, have it rip automatically and I'd de-select the tracks I don't need.

CDex does what you want. I use dBpoweramp but it's not free. There are a lot of free rippers if you google it.
WMP is pretty good actually but the database it uses sometimes picks the wrong version of an album and misnames tracks which might be what you mean by re-naming files? if so you can manually edit the track names before ripping but it is a nuisance. Funnily enough the free music databases used by most rippers tend to be more accurate
