Freenas and Android tv

Hi I have a nas server running FreeNas with most of my movie backups and music on it. I want to get an android tv device but is there anyway to play nas media on the device without the use of a third party app?

Another question: Is there an android app that can sync your phone automatically with a freenas server? I guess a work around would be to sync a desktop and the server then sync the phone to the desktop but is there a more direct option??

It depends on what apps are native on the Android device, but you would very likely need to use a third party app.

Many use Plex, but I just enable DLNA server and use a free DLNA-enabled media player. Of course, your device may already have a built in DLNA player.

Not sure about the syncing question. Hopefully someone else can help you there.

Plex should be a free plug-in on FreeNAS, but there may be a charge for the app. I found Plex a little clunky anyway, and it will share all content on your NAS whether you select it or not. That's why I stay away from it.

I would just recommend enabling DLNA on FreeNAS (not sure if a plug-in is required) and using the BubbleUPnP app on Nexus (free).

Edit: I guess BubbleUPnP is actually a server. VPlayer, DicePlayer, and MX Player are DLNA media players.

VPlayer, DicePlayer, and MX Player are DLNA media players. these are all apps that can be put on the nexus through the store or do I need to side load them? also do they provide subtitles or will I need to download them myself?

All of these apps are available in the Google Play store.

Subtitles will need to be downloaded by you.
