I am running XP professional fully up to date

Sometimes when I insert a CD or DVD the sytem freezes
I therefore cant see anything in the event veiwer to tell me what is
happening.

I have two striped raid sets in the system
The DVD writer is on Ide 1 on its own, as master

Any help appreciated

Are you sure that you are not:
1. Allowing insufficient time for the disk to spin.
2. Using Dammaged Disks
3. Operating Devices without relevant drivers and
software support installed.
3. Inserting Optical Media in Drive incorrectly
(sometimes is pays to open the drive and then close
the drive again.

The question that has to be asked is: does the drive make
the correct spinning noise (slow to start and increasing
into a high pitched consistent wine?) or does the drive
deliver short bursts of sound as if it is trying to pic
up speed and then not able to get to the right speed and
then start again?)

If your drive is making the latter style sounds then you
may either have a defective drive or u may have dammaged
disks.

Give more detail!

It was the fact that I was not giving the CD/DVD time to spin up
I have been trying it all afternoon and haven't had a freeze yet

Yes , and i sat and sat and it still didn't do nothing , even removed the cd
and it did nothing, washed the cd so if would not be dirty so it would be
clean and it still freezes up. The thing won't work. It locks up the whole
system. Plus if the restore cds that i just got would not even work, they
locked up also.

Hi Zagan,

No the cd's are new , and the system is a Sony VAIO PCV RS 420, They came
out and replaced the motherboard on here. I have called sony several times on
this issue. THey replaced the power source, they replaced the floppy drive.
The dvd rw locks up the computer. No sounds it just locks up and freezes the
system. I had a time getting my printer cd to be accepted, it took turning
puter on and off 3 times then it took the cd.
