I currently have a custom PC rig and I am starting to suspect that it is my SSD causing freezes and delays on programs such as Adobe Reader and Microsoft Word 2013. There is an obvious delay opening and non-responsive time when opening documents and I do not know why it is doing it.

Specs:
Main HD -> CORSAIR 128 GB FORCE GS SERIES SATA III SSD
Secondary HD ->2TB SATA III 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB CACHE HDD
RAM -> 32 GB DDR3 (Ripjaws X-Series 4 x 8GB 1866 PC3 14900)
CPU -> AMD FX-8350 4.0GHZ (8-Core Processor)
GPU -> EVGA NVIDIA GTX 770 ACX 4GB GDDR5 PCI-E 3
PSU -> AZZA 800W POWER SUPPLY
OS -> Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

  • SSD is filled with 11 GB free space.
    Changing Performance Settings in Windows 7 (even visual styles) makes no difference
    Restarting Windows fresh boot has no effect
    Freezing always lasts more than 5-seconds
    All Windows drivers and GPU updates are up to date.
    Indexing is DISABLED
    Rig was custom built by a company. Purchased in July of 2014 (Had this problem out of box ignored it until I started opening documents more frequently and the problem was consistent)

Unfortunately the type of problem you describe, while not at all uncommon, can be quite difficult to diagnose in terms of what precisely is causing the problem. The difficulty in doing so lies in the fact that virtually any major component in your system can be the root of the problem, e.g., your SSD, memory, graphics card, system board, - even the PSU or monitor. The list goes on & on. You should use whatever diagnostic tests are available for these components. I assume you already have done so for the Corsair SSD, yes?

1. Review your OS configuration to determine if there's any setting that might be causing a problem.

2. At the outset, review the settings of your system board to determine if some setting might be awry. If you're...
Hey deliriumtr1gger. This is a fairly common issue and indeed it sounds like it might be the SSD at a first glance. I'd recommend that you take a look at this article and the info it has to offer: http://z9.io/2013/11/26/yes-finally-fixed-ssd-freezing-computer/
It might prove useful.

Hope that helps. Let me know how everything goes.

1. Review your OS configuration to determine if there's any setting that might be causing a problem.

2. At the outset, review the settings of your system board to determine if some setting might be awry. If you're able to reset the settings in one fell swoop to "optimum" or some such label (I'm not terribly familiar with AMD-based systems) do so and determine if that helps.

3. If you disconnect the secondary HDD do you still experience the freezing & delays? Aside from the secondary drive no other storage devices installed?

Have you been in touch with the PC's builder to see if they can shed any light on the problem you're experiencing?
