Frequency out of range / Geforce 9800 gtx+

Hello Nvidia's. I am using a Nvidia geforce 9800 gtx+.
i have just gotten the new windows 7 64 bit, but when i try to launch a game, the screen turns black, and my monitor gives me the message.
Frequency Out of Range (for Left 4 Dead, the digits were 74.9khz / 59.9hz.)
It also happens when i launch old games, ones i can play on my old laptop with windows xp.

my monitor is pretty old, so i think the problem is that it cant take a fast refresh rate. Here is, what i think is the specs of the monitor:

my motherboard and CPU is intel DH55HC, and intel i3, and should fit fine. They are completely new parts, and my computer doesn't report other failures like restarting or crashing.

i have made sure to have the latest driver for the nvidia card.
in dxdiag the driver is called: 8.17.12.5896, and at the directory it is called "Nvidia\258.96\WinVista_Win7_64"

Dxdiag says i have directx 11 installed.

What is my problem? Why does all the games want to launch off with this too high refresh rate (or resolution)? i have tried to "Force V-SYNC" in nvidia control panel, because it ought to decrease the refresh to the monitors level, but it didn't help.

Can't find anywhere else in the Nvidia control panel to control the games refresh rate. How can i make the games run slower? do i just need a newer monitor for windows 7? 😵

it fits nicely into the accepted freq range, so it's odd that it bugs out like that. Might be the resolution, but I doubt that...
and v-sync or running games slower won't help whit this issue AFAIK...

Would it be possible to disable all but one display mode in the nvidia control panel, just to force it (and the games) to use some known good mode, for example 1280 X 1024 60 Hz? I haven't used nvidia for quite some time and I'm not sure how the control panel actually works 😛


edit: have you installed drivers for the monitor or are you using the generic windows drivers? Ie does the monitor show up as SyncMaster XXXXX in the device manager, or is it listed just as plug'n'play display?

A 60Hz refresh rate is normal. I have an older system with a 1280x1024 @ 60Hz monitor with no problem (8600GTS). I am guessing the game is trying to start at resolutions beyond what your monitor supports. What resolution are you running at?

@mousemonkey No. i don't know what these files is, or how to access them. but i know that the failure comes both in new and older games.

My resolution is 1024x768.

When i try to play games like Metro, the "out of frequency"-report becomes higher, something like 80hz.. thats why i get the feeling that the games just choose their own refresh rate.
But Kari is right. In Left 4 Dead the refresh rate should fit inside the capability.

I don't really know anything about this area, is it right that the reason for two numbers, is the first is the horizontal frequence, and the second number is the vertical?

The monitor is listed as plug and play in device manager.
What i posted was a DumpEDID for monitors. the problem is that im not completely sure if it is true, because the dumpEDID reported 2 monitors, look for yourself.

but usually games use some pretty low default resolution when launched for the first time.... worth checking it out though

I think Metro 2033's default res is 1680x1050, which you can change in it's INI file. As for L4D, I have no clue 🙁

Update: i installed a new game: Crysis, which actually worked!!! i could put the resolution to 1200x1000 ingame without problems.

this is so odd, because left 4 dead worked on my old laptop with xp... and doesnt now.
i guess it just have higher start frequency, which my gpu can, but monitor cant handle

So... Uhmm.. can i ask where to locate the ini file, and is it harder to change than with notepad?

start looking in the games install folder, then proceed to my documents folder, there might be a folder for the savegames and other misc stuff somewhere in there.

and notepad should work just fine, should be plain text inside the ini.
