Frequendy out of range

Have an eMachine LE1987 monitor and I keep getting frequency out of range on boot up. Have an old CRT that works just fine. I can boot the computer with the VGA cord unplugged from the monitor and when I plug the monitor in I can use the computer, but when I go to check the refresh rate, the error message "frequency out of range"comes back up. Any solutions?

Set the frequency to a lower rate when you have the CRT plugged in; then try the LE1987
