I recently upgraded my CPU from R3 1200 to R5 3600x and started experiencing frequent crashes. switching back to the old cpu stops the crashes.
The crashes have no correlation to system load, it has crashed on idle as much as it has crashed when running a game or a synthetic load.

The BSOD codes are usually security related as follows:
"IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"
"DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"
"HYPERVISOR_ERROR"
"SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION"
...

I've tried everything i could think of:
  • Reseating RAM / Running 1 stick at a time
  • XMP on/off, memory diagnostic
  • Clean reinstalling windows multiple times to both 10 and 11, updating drivers
  • Clearing CMOS, resetting BIOS, updating BIOS (tried almost all the available versions at this point)
  • Secure boot on/off, fTPM on/off, disabling cores, underclocking,
Here are some minidump files: https://s1.fileditch.ch/NfBCgStxnJohHPIwKqx.zip

parts:
Asrock AB350m pro4
R5 3600x
2x4G Teamgroup T-force 2666
MSI RX 570 armor oc

Update:
I updated my outdated Realtek Lan drivers and uninstalled steam audio drivers but the crashes presisted.

I have 2 new dump files here: https://s1.fileditch.ch/ouMcDHHuOgRdCKzZsCoh.zip
both of them had the error code : "HYPERVISOR_ERROR "

AND another here:
https://s1.fileditch.ch/uHWMdDCdEHbcVCvrYLn.zip

ANY (ALL) help will be (was) greatly appreciated!

The CPU is defective. I will be attempting RMA.

its probably a bad CPU then, might need to rma it & get it replaced.

thats my interpretation of the error. Swap CPU & it works fine... no point trying to fix an install that works with another CPU

i think the hypervisor is probably on the CPU. its located in the processor area in bios so yes.

File: 112422-6890-01.dmp (Nov 25 2022 - 05:39:54)
BugCheck: [IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (A)]
Probably caused by: ntkrnlmp.exe (Process: PowerToys.Powe)
Uptime: 0 Day(s), 6 Hour(s), 30 Min(s), and 52 Sec(s)

an unexpected error.. I was thinking it would be the same.
i used to like irq errors but over time, i worked out others are easier to fix.

I don't want to offer drivers if the problem is actually the CPU. Could break...

Ideally i would get new CPU tested in another PC and see if it has same problems. Given its most recent change. And PC works fine without it.

I dount its cause but what PSU?
the PSU is a gigabyte G750H (it isn't the model that was exploding not too long ago). the wattage definitely should be enough for my system
I don't really have another system that i can test the new CPU in

no friends? no repair stores you can ask?

I don't see HYpervisor errors a lot

download Win11 Auto Installation Program (NetAdapterCx ) from under windows header here - https://www.realtek.com/en/componen...0-1000m-gigabit-ethernet-pci-express-software
as your current lan drivers are from 2016

I have seen these cause errors before
Jul 21 2017SteamStreamingSpeakers.sysSteam Streaming Speakers driver (Valve Corporation)
Jul 29 2017SteamStreamingMicrophone.sysSteam Streaming Microphone driver (Valve Corporation)

everything else installed is from AMD, so if its a driver, its one of theirs.
they released new drivers today to fix some BSOD so maybe - https://www.amd.com/en/support/chipsets/amd-socket-am4/b350 (don't need raid)

Thank you very much for the heads up on the realtek drivers.
i will ask a friend to try the CPU with his PC but that will take a long time...
I don't and have never used the steam streaming audio drivers so should i remove them from my system?

i see what you mean. I don't see it often so need to look

most of the fixes are:
update windows
update drivers
run sfc scannow
right click start
choose terminal (admin)
if it doesn't open as powershell, click the drop down arrow in title row and choose from list
copy/paste this command into window:

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

and press enter

Then type SFC /scannow

and press enter

Restart PC if SFC fixes any files as some fixes require a restart to be implemented

First command repairs the files SFC uses to clean files, and SFC fixes system files

SFC = System File Checker. First command runs DISM - https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/what-is-dism?view=windows-11
uninstall 3rd party AV - doesn't apply

Do you have virtualisation turned on in BIOS?

no 3-rd party AV

i do have virtualisation turned on and i have already tried turning it off before but it didnt help

just ran chkdsk, no issues
i have the chipset driver already installed i think
same drive, same install, same everything gives no bsod with older cpu.

installed the latest chipset drivers, i havent had a crash yet but i have no way of knowing if the issue is actually resolved or its just luck

I am curious if the Hypervisor one will come back again.

sadly, the cpu was bought secondhand and is well out of warranty so i don't think ill be able to rma it.
i don't really mind reinstalling windows that much, already done it a million times

as for the error code, i have seen no pattern to it. it just cycles trough the same couple of error codes completely randomly and i have found nothing that makes it crash on demand. if i at least knew what was causing the crashes i would avoid it or disable the feature in bios or something (????) it is very frustrating...

would providing bigger dump files help you potentially help you find the issue?

I'm gonna be giving the cpu to a friend for him to test it and if it crashes for him too i guess i just have a faulty chip :c

After testing the CPU in a friends system, we confirmed that the CPU is defective.
I will be attempting to RMA but my hopes aren't high...

solution to others having similar issues: it is very unlikely but its not impossible for the cpu to defective. try all the troubleshooting steps you can think of and/or look up and if all else fails, RMA. if you bought the CPU officially from AMD or some authorized distributor of some kind, you should be fine.
