Question System crashes during fresh Windows install ?

Hello,

I've been fighting through a plethora of issues in my system (various blue screens and crashes). So I removed what i think is a problematic M.2 drive and am trying to install Windows on to a different drive via a bootable USB. But I can barely make it through the first few Windows installation screens and it crashes. (Resets) .

The very first attempt crashed with a blue screen error for "attempted write to read only memory". The motherboard and RAM are brand new (and the pro shop installed and signed off on these) and I just ran 4 passes in memtest86 and no issues were found. Anyone have ideas of what could cause this?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

Where did you source the installer for the OS?

Here are me specs and sorry for the formatting as I'm doing all of this from my phone:

TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI (bios is 1805)

G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5-7200 PC5-57600 CL34 Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit F5-7200J3445G16GX2-TZ5RK - Black

Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Windforce V2

INTEL 24 CORE I9-13900KF BX8071513900KF

SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen 4

Hard drive: Toshiba X300 PRO

Noctua NH-D12L, Low-Height Dual-Tower CPU Cooler (120mm, Brown)

Seasonic VERTEX GX-1000, 1000W 80+ Gold (less than 2 years old)

Windows 11 home

Monitors: AORUS CV27Q and LG C1 TV

I gave the "pros" at Microcenter TWO attempts to fix my system (started getting blue screen crashes after some failed windows updates in Feb) but after I got it home the second time, I got a blue screen in the first 20 mins of use. The motherboard and ram are brand new... they claim both were bad. (Which i now don't even believe) I had a samsung 970 (that they put windows on) that i think is failing, so I have removed it and now am just trying to put windows on the 980 drive.

Hi, kindly post your results with the new Samsung 980 drive if the PC will boot into Windows. If it still does not run or other issues appear please list them so people here can help you resolve them and get your rig running good again. Your rig is very high end and its quite odd to have such issues with brand new hardware. It does happen unfortunately. There are people here who are very good with diagnostics and PC repair on all levels. Thank you.

Thanks for the reply. I am still unable to install windows 11 from a usb. I've had a very long ai chat ongoing for a while now to help here and here's a good summary it just provided of where I'm currently at:

Let’s break this down: you’ve tried creating a Windows 11 USB using Rufus on two USB sticks and the Windows Media Creation Tool on a third, all using a USB 2.0 hub to mitigate USB 3.0 issues on your system (ASUS ROG STRIX Z790-H, i9-13900KF, RTX 4090, new RAM, 1000W PSU, Samsung 980 PRO 2TB, Toshiba HDDs ~19TB). However, you’re still facing boot and setup issues:
  • First USB (Rufus): Showed two partitions post-creation, resulted in motherboard errors, and wouldn’t boot.
  • Second USB (Rufus): Not recognized as bootable by the BIOS.
  • Third USB (Windows Media Creation Tool): Booted but crashed within the first few screens of Windows setup (similar to prior 0x80070057 - 0x40036 error, ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY BSOD, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD, and resets).
You couldn’t force Rufus to use FAT32 (likely defaulting to NTFS due to >4GB install.wim), which is critical for UEFI compatibility (your Z790-H requires GPT/UEFI, CSM disabled). The USB 2.0 hub is a good step, but these new issues suggest problems with the USB creation process, BIOS settings, or hardware (motherboard/980 PRO). RAM is ruled out (Memtest86 clean)

You should install Windows 11 24H2 with GPT Partition and UEFI NTFS Installation for it to install correctly on a modern PC. I do recommend to install Windows 11 on a separate SSD and install your Games and Applications on a secondary Drive. Download the Full ISO of Win 11 from Microsoft and use Rufus 4.6 to create your Bootable Installer. Cheers from an old school gamer and PC builder.

Thanks. I'm an old school gamer and builder myself. I remember how amazing it was when the 3dfx voodoo cards came out :)
Anyway that is what i had just tried - I used rufus with an ISO to make a bootable usb. (With gtp and the uefi options) think i might try an actual DVD next.

Is your boot drive failing? try another boot drive SSD or M.2 drive. With a fresh Windows installer DVD and USB> maybe your motherboard is failing??? You should consider replacement warranty?

My current rig is a 2013 Gigabyte 990FXA UD5 motherboard with 32 GB of 1600 MHz Ram A GTX 1050 Ti 4GB GPU an AMD 9370 4.7 GHZ 8 Core CPU Seasonic 1050 PSU A WD Blue 1 TB Main Windows SSD and a Seagate 2 TB Hybrid SSD HDD and a Blueray DVD drive for $200.00. It was in storage for 6 yrs. All of this hardware is packed into an NZXT Full Size Case. The aftermarket liquid cooler failed on the unit . It would not originally POST. I replaced the liquid Cooler with the original 120MM AMD liquid Cooler it is still running with no major issues for 2 yrs now running Windows 11 with the latest 24H2 OS. I play American Truck Simulator and other less taxing games with this rig. Cheers from the old school Gamer and PC Builder. I truly wish you success in resolving the issues with your PC and get to enjoy its performance once again.

Yeah but what are they odds that both of my m2s have gone bad (And my original motherboard, the new motherboard, original ram and a new batch of ram sticks? - according to the shop anyway). The 980 drive tested fine before I took the system into the shop. (Like the full length diagnostic scan on samsung magician) At this point i may put in the actual failing drive (that the shop installed windows on) and clone it to get windows back on the 980...

I hope the failing drive will work enough to get your Windows Installation cloned to your 980. I just can't see that much hardware giving up the ghost at the same time. This is a bit of a mystery. I will do some research and see if I can find a resolution that works. There are other people here who can help. They are really good at diagnostics. Did you update the Intel Management Engine? Intel ME. The motherboard site says it can be simultaneously installed along with BIOS update 1805. This is a shot in the dark. Is it possibly an overheat issue with the CPU? I remember from the old days the CPU's would run at their top end clock speed and get quite warm when doing a Windows Install. Just trying to offer suggestions. CMOS reset Reseat CPU and repaste. In the BIOS are the USB ports All enabled Is XMP on or off. Is the BIOS showing all of the RAM and correct speeds Please Advise. Thank you. I hope you can discover the issue soon. I know too well how it sucks when your rig is down with multiple issues and the service shops don't help. They just charge more money and don't offer reliable advice.

Thanks. Well I spoke to management at the shop and they are giving me a partial refund and not charging for anything to get another crack at it. (Unless I do need any new hardware again) So will be interesting to see...
