Fried Chip or Board or?

Fried board or chip? Hey guys, never been stuck like this before, I have fixed so many pc's in my time , but I dont have the parts to swap to trouble shoot this issue, my 2 year old I think was hammering on the pretty glowing blue power switch on my tower, its an amd X2 system, anyway, the pc would keep shuting off after about 4 seconds when powering on, I switched the PS, yanked all the Perifieals, HD , sound , even the videocard and the same thing happens, I'm guessing it may be the board... do any of your think if could be the cpu that causes the shutdown after 4 seconds??? ( never had a bad chip b4 ) yet becuase of the amd chip prices, this time i,m hopeful, lol.

any help appreciated

Check for any shorts on the MB. You can use a cardboard box and test the system from there. Also, look for any blown/leaking capacitors Most likely a MB issue as I have had many similar issues and all were because of a poorly repaired Gigabyte board...

u said ur kid was hammering on ur case switch, could it be that your power switch gone bad or jammed? have u tried changing it??

Stupid question, how about the switch itself? The one hammered at by the youngster? Is it sticking? You know that if you press and hold the power switch the system will come on, but shut off after 4 seconds. To do a cold shutoff of a modern PC the button is pressed and held for four seconds, that's why the length of time you mention is interesting. Have you disconnected the switch and tried turning on the sytem by shorting the pins on the motherboard?

Step 1: take 2 yr. out back and teach him the appropriate use of a hammer. (in whateve manner you see fit, but I'd be inclined to use it upon his head...)

Step 2: Swap out the reset sw. for the power sw, see if problem goes away. (just swap mb connectors.... Leave power sw. disconnected)

Step 3: Works? Done. Doesn't work? Get power sply tested.

As Netburst and Bustedsony suggested, the power switch is the prime suspect.

There no such thing as a stupid question. not everyone is as smart %@# as you are.

but I had already taking the power switch into consideration. I had removed all the case to board connections, and jumped the pins for the power switch to power it on, unfortunately that was not the problem.

I check that too, very closely with a flash light.. though you are probly right something may be shorted. thanks for the suggestion though.

It certainly won't hurt to clear the CMOS. Also, reseating the RAM, graphics board, etc, might fix something that was jarred loose by the pounding.

check the PSU switch... if that doesn't solve the problem then reconnect all items... finally check your PSU

and keep PCs out of reach of chidren

I have seen a Heatsink/Fan assembly come loose from only one leg and that was enough to cause poor contact between the processor and the cooler. This happened on a 1 year old Core2 processor with the standard Intel cooler. It was easily missed and easily fixed.
