Specs of the computer
AMD Phenom II X4 960T
MSI 770 C45 motherboard
Asus HD 7970 gpu
8 GB DDR3 ram
160 GB Harddrive
600W Enermax Platimax 80 Platinum power supply
What happend, I gathered arround all these components I had lying arround. The motherboard originally had AMD Athlon II X2 240. I replaced it with that said Phenom which was compatible according to many sites. I installed windows 10 pro 64 bit on the harddrive just fine, everything was going well. When I was about to find ethernet cable so I could download all the drivers and such, I heard weird noise, like when cable is touching a fan. I looked in the case and there was no cable in a fan, when suddenly the PC turned off. When I tried to turn it on, nothing happend. I turned off the power supply and tried again - nothing. I turned off the power supply again and waited until all the electricity is sucked off and turned the psu on again. When I press the button on the case I heard the noise again, but there was a giant spark comming out of the mosfet area. I immediatly knew what was going on. In a second I plugged the psu off. Now I am left with most likely dead motherboard and I am not sure if it is caused because it has no cooling at all and I'm running more powerful cpu on it or if the power supply just went nuts and fried my mobo. I am scared to try anything right now. Pic of the mobo: View: https://imgur.com/a/XJBLpbo
I asked this question on some subreddit before and many people told me it may be because the motherboard just has weak VRMs and no cooling at all.
