Hello everyone,
The network question is for a digital video recorder home security camera system. Specifically the Zeus Dvr 10 which has been out of production for a while. Normally I can remotely view this DVR on my smartphone and it also sends email alerts with jpeg images. A month ago, we had a thunderstorm in our area and I noticed that all the network features in my DVR stopped working.
Initially I thought all I had to do was change the settings in the machine. I'm not an expert so I am not extremely versed in setting up networks, just the basics. I tried Static mode, entered in the IP address my router gave my DVR, subnet mask, gateway. The DVR machine also asked for two DNS numbers, I am not sure the function of those. But I was able to find two DNS numbers when I accessed my router information, and I entered it into the DVR settings. I plug my DVR into my router with an ethernet wire, but the device still shows up as "inactive" on my router. I tried an "echo ping" on my personal computer with the DVR's ip address and no response. Then I tried DHCP setting on my DVR. The DVR created/forced through an IP address that was already used by another device on my router. Under DHCP, the DVR does not even show up as a device on my network map on my router.
I researched a bit more, and I found out that power outages and thunderstorms can mess with the network interface card on my DVR. I researched online, and they said that removing CMOS battery inside the DVR will "reset" the network interface card. I removed the CMOS battery, waited ten minutes, tried again but my DVR could not establish a net work connection.
My last resort is to purchase a USB ethernet adapter to plug into my DVR's usb slot. Since my original ethernet port seems fried, I'm think of turning my open USB port into an ethernet port. However, I am not sure this would work. Since this DVR is not a personal computer, I cannot install the drivers for the USB ethernet adapter, though I haven't tried it yet.
Could anyone give my any tips to restore network connectivity to my DVR? Thank you so much.
