Friend wants to upgrade but not sure which parts

Hi, so my friend has a terrible computer right now but wants to start upgrading it to play games.

His current choice is either a GPU upgrade or Motherboard + CPU upgrade. His GPU is a GeForce 8600 gt and his CPU is a Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 (2.2GHz)

He needs to buy another motherboard as well since he wants to upgrade his CPU to an AMD one plus the RAM is DDR2.

So which part should he upgrade first to get the best performance?

Upgrade the motherboard first if he is going to upgrade the graphics card immediately after, but if he is getting the motherboard after the card then i suggest he upgrades the graphics card

my suggestion, get a better gpu then maybe oc the cpu a little. but a better cooler if budget permits, one that is compatible with current cpu's, so that he can use it still when he gets a new board. just my 2 cents

Well - Buy a Gigabyte R9 290 first. With a Seasonic 650W power supply.

Then later buy an i5 4690k with Asus Z97-A mobo and 2 x 4gb 1866 ram.

Ok, so I take it he should buy the GPU first. His budget is about £185 so he can't really afford all of those high tech PC parts.

So he will buy the GPU and PSU with the money, I just want to find out what the best quality parts he can get for £185.
