I'm helping my friend build a computer, this is his planned build, is this a good build? Should he change anything? He would like to stay around $1250.

Case Phanteks enthoo luxe
Cpu: Intel Core i5-4690K Cooler:h100i
Gpu: ASUS R9280X or EVGA GeForce GTX770
Motherboard: gigabyte GA-Z97X
Power supply: evga g2 supernova 750
ram: corsair vengence 8gb 2400 mhz (for him its the same price as 1800mhz so why not)
wd black 1tb
samsung evo 240gb

Is this build good? What should he go for with for the gpu?

For pure gaming, Intel in general is overpriced. They simply can't compare to AMD's prices for the performance in gaming. I spent $80 on my CPU new, and I can run near everything maxed out. It really depends on what you're doing though, not enough info was given on that. Rendering and editing is where Intel shines most, even if they do make CPUs that game well.

CPU is overkill for gaming really, but nothing wrong with that in particular, it will do great for editing and rendering stuff. Personally I would go with the 280X, ASUS makes better coolers than EVGA in my opinion. It will perform slightly worse than the 770, but you could stretch for a 290 maybe. It really all depends on what he's going to be doing. If it's going to be used for rendering and all that, I would suggest going with the 280X, get a cheaper case, maybe a Corsair one, and get 16gb of memory instead of 8.
