My friends PC can't stop crashing in almost every game we play, Overwatch, Paladins, Fortnite (the worst one), GTA 5, CS:GO.

The crashes happen randomly, sometimes when launching the game, and sometimes midway through a match. He doesn't get the BSOD, but the game simply crashes and he's returned to his desktop.

We've troubleshooted extensively, re-installing Windows 2 times, checking every part and every cable, and even upgrading his CPU from a 3600 to a 5800x, with no luck.

His specs are:
GPU: 2070 Super
CPU: Ryzen 5800x
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro (2x8gb) 3600 CL18
PSU: Corsair RM650 80+ Gold
MOBO: Asus Strix x570-E

Any ideas?

Are you monitoring temps?

Have you checked Event Viewer, Reliability History?

Is the RAM being used on the motherboard QVL?

Are all the applicable motherboard level utilities and drivers installed? Check Device Manager for yellow triangles?

Overclocked? Turned off XMP?

Current drivers?

Personally, would think I would want a bit more PSU overhead than a 650 on a 2070 and 5800X. Not saying that is the issue specifically, but it surely could be.

Thanks for replying!

  1. Temps should be still fine, we tested them repeatedly not long ago, and I forgot to mention he has a 240 Corsair AIO. We'll be monitoring temps today to be sure though.
  2. No we have not! Bingo, Overwatch crashed and this was the error log:

The program Overwatch.exe version 1.70.0.29374 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.
To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.

Hang type: Top level window is idle

  1. The ram is compatible with the motherboard yeah
  2. Yep, all installed.
  3. No overclock, XMP on. We've tried to turn XMP off and even underclock but the crashes remain.
  4. Agreed with the PSU, that will be the next upgrade, but like you said probably not the cause of the crashes.

Strange. Does this individual have a good fast internet connection?

The only article I could come up with regarding the "top level idle" was in relation to the graphics driver. It mentioned to use DDU to uninstall the graphics driver and then to manually update to the most current available.

Yep, internet is fast.

We underclocked his GPU massively and he hasn't crashed since. What does that tell you?
