Had this processor since late 2012 and has worked like a charm the whole time but now I think it's time it was upgraded. I'm just stumped on whether to get an 8400 or a 1600. I'm not much of a content creator and tend to just play games. Honestly don't know at this point. Plus I will have to buy a z370 motherboard when I can't even OC but at the same time, I can't really go for an 8600k because I'm on a budget. I do aim to get a new one for Christmas, so i can't wait till after for B360 to come out. Pls help xD

Solution
Your 8gb is ddr3, you will need ddr4 for Ryzen. Yes, 8gb is still good enough for gaming now. With Ryzen 1600 and gtx 1060 6gb, high-very high setting should get you close to 144FPS. FOr ultra, you will need GTX 1070

i5 3470

msi 1060 6gb gaming x
8gb ddr3
120gb ssd
1tb hdd
600w psu

I live in the UK, budget is around £300-400. Saying that I can sell my old parts for a decent price (minimum ~ £100)

I tend to play fps games like cs go, pubg and battlefield
I have a 144hz 1080p monitor also but i don't plan on upgrading that at all to 1440p
Settings, tbh i can bear anything except games like battlefield where it actually has decent graphics
I've always kinda wanted to stream also and ryzen is decent for that as it has the headroom

For you need and budget, I recommend this upgrade :) PSU can wait after you sell old parts/ current break down. What is your PSU btw?

I wouldn't bother. GHz for GHz, there's only about a 20% performance improvement from Sandy Bridge (your Ivy Bridge is just a shrunk-down version of Sandy Bridge) to Kaby Lake. Performance gain with each generation of CPU has been almost negligible for nearly a decade.

https://www.hardocp.com/article/2017/01/13/kaby_lake_7700k_vs_sandy_bridge_2600k_ipc_review/

The only reasons to upgrade from any Intel CPU back to Sandy Bridge are:

  • ■ You want more cores/threads. Not relevant since you're proposing an i5 to i5 upgrade.
    ■ You want some of the new features added since your CPU was made. USB-C support, motherboards with M.2 NVMe slots, 4k Netflix with the integrated GPU, etc.
    ■ You're building a low-power system and want to take advantage of the substantial reduction in power consumption since Sandy Bridge.
If none of those apply, I'd say save up your money for a better GPU.

Okay kinda scrap the streaming part and tbh ram prices are way too god damn high for me to consider getting 16gb, i might stick with 8
