From US, going to school in Canada. What's my best option to handle my soon to be out of contract phone

Currently I'm on Verizon with a two year contract that's going to expire very soon. Right now I'm using a Galaxy S3 so I'm assuming once that contract is up I can put a Canadian providers sim card in and it would all work? But then how would it work when I go back to the states for breaks? I'm just wondering the best way you guys think this should be handled. Also if any Canadians are reading this I have to ask what would you guys say are the best providers/plans? Thanks, this is a very new thing to me that I'm all pretty unfamiliar with.
