Front panel audio & USB headset not working

A couple of days ago the audio just went out on my headphones (HyperX Cloud II, USB rear panel connected). Since then, nothing except the rear panel headphone jack has been working. The only recognised audio device otherwise is the 'digital audio output' (which I never use) and everything else refuses to work.

What on earth could possibly cause both my USB headset and my front panel audio to stop working while the rear panel jack still works? Everything else is unaffected. Tried for hours re-updating drivers etc, no luck.

Mobo: ASUS PRO GAMING Z170 (so realtek hd audio is the expected audio source)
OS: Windows 10 Pro
Case is Fractal Define R5 (v v v v difficult to see connection of front panel without spending ages unbuilding it...)

check the settings in advance audio in the realtek panel if front is not disable also this usb headset use it's own software or driver .

how do I check it's not disabled? It seems to light up when I plug something in but no sound plays
