Question Front panel connectors

My case has a USB 3.2 gen 2 front i/o port. If my motherboard doesn't have a USB 3.2 gen 2 connector, can I plug it into a USB 3.2 gen 1 connector on my motherboard? would it still work t at a slower speed?
