Hi,
I'm running headphones off of the front audio port on the computer, but after a power outtage last night all signal to the headphones is in out of phase mono which is terrible.
If I plug the headphones through my speakers which connect to the rear audio port they sound fine.

Any ideas would be grand.

You are correct it's the same on-board audio source. I havn't tried the audio drivers as of yet as it was fine until the power-outage on the pc (tripped PSU surge protection). I'll give it ago.

If the above software fix doesn't solve the issue, I would have to assume the problem lies with the hardware. In that case, you may just want to avoid further headaches and get a discrete sound card to solve the problem. If you do, it would be best then, to go into BIOS and disable the on-board sound. And remember to move your front panel cable/connector from the MB audio header to the new card's front panel header.

Just an update on this, I've installed an internal sound card (Xonar D1) how the problem has now changed and the audio is sounding backwards, in that the foreground noise (voices, etc) are very distant and washed out where as the drums and such in the background are fine. Could the port need replacing? (though I'm not sure thats possible).

That's the first I've heard of a discrete sound card inheriting the on-board audio problem. You did remember to move your FP cable to the new card, yes? And disable the on-board in BIOS? Are you sure it isn't your headphones that became damaged with the outage/surge?

Yup, I've connected it to the card and turned off the on-board, headphones are fine everywhere else (I use them for my job so first thing I checked). I am using the same connection via the HD Audio connection instead of the AC_97, may swap it over see if that changes.
Is there a chance it's the actual female socket that is damaged and not the connections?

I sure wouldn't think so. All the socket amounts to is a pair of wires connected to two contacts in the jack. But try the port on the rear of the sound card for a test.
