frusterated with counterstrike!

i bought counter strike by itself and it had a cd error and then i took it
back and got the platinum collection i can play it fine on steam. But, i can
get any words to come up?? i get the picture but when im in the game i can
see any letter and there letters all over the screen. kinda like the old
nintendo did when it froze up. please help. does this have anything to do
with my 3d card? I dont know.

Well maybe if you told us what video card you have, what operating
system, what video drivers (latest?) etc we might be able to help you.
Sounds like video issue to me.

Have you got the video settings too high? What are they? Are you using
OpenGL or DirectX? You got latest DirectX?

the video card i have came with my dell. when i click on the settings tab in
properties its says display:
plug and play moniter on Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics. So i dont
know what kind it is exactly but thats as good as i can tell ya. I m running
Windows XP

What Dell model is it? You may be able to find out from their website,
or I imagine Dell give you loads of manuals etc.

What does it say when you hit the "advanced" button in display settings?
It looks like you have only got default graphics drivers.

A better way to find out would be to go :

control panel -> system -> hardware -> device manager -> display
adapters

and tell us what that is.

Thats Intel's on-board graphics chip (you won't have a video card) and it
won't like many 3d games.....

I figured out the problem. It was steam. I went into launch options and
changed it to -d3d -1024.
