So, I received the 980 today and was excited to plug it in and use it. So I did and not thinking before I had bought it my system started bottle necking it, not even being able to run Cry sis 1 at highest, I would constantly get frame rate drops everywhere. So finally I confessed to myself that I had been silly and not done my research to properly balance my system to run the card at full potential. So using the following information below showing my whole rig, I was wondering if someone could tell me what component is mostly bottle necking my system so I can fix the problem. THANK YOU! ^_^

CPU - Intel i7-3770 @ 3.4GHz Quad Core Hyperthreading LGA1155 8MB Cache

PSU - Seasonic M12II 620W 80+ Bronze Modular 6PIN PCI-E 120MM Fan Power Supply

GPU - EVGA Nvidia GTX 980 4GB 7.0GHz

Mobo - MSI Z77A-G41 ATX LGA1155 Z77 DDR3

RAM - Kingston HyperX 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 DIMM Dual Channel

HDD- Western Digital Red 2TB SATA3 64MB Cache 3.5in

What FPS are you getting with Crysis 1? Even today, the top tier CPU's struggle if you want to maintain over 60 FPS at all times. If you want higher minimum FPS, you simply need to OC that CPU. Get a good aftermarket HSF if you need too. Better yet, just learn to live with it.

Crysis 1 is still demanding on the CPU, in part due to it not using many threads. It's an old game designed around old hardware, and a different mindset. Back when it was released, 30 FPS was acceptable. Now people want 60+, and the games engine was not built for that, though you should still see over 60 FPS most the time.

One more note, make sure to patch it. Out of the box, it has performance issues.

Here's the problem, my friend is running an i5 and 8GB of RAM too and for some reason he gets higher framerates in dayz, GTAIV, crysis, ect. I do understand those are all un optimized games (especially GTAIV) but still, he's still getting higher framerates than me.

In almost all games, an i5 is just as fast as an i7. If his is OC'ed, he'll get higher FPS. There are an extremely rare few games that give i7's an advantage.

And there are different settings and resolutions that may be used. Many people who play at "ultra" settings have a few settings turned down, such as AA. No one, even today, plays Crysis with MSAA x8.

Do you think going back to what you said before about crysis being a CPU intensive game means that in this case even the GPU upgrade didn't help? I'm just noticing going from a 660 to a 980, I don't see a major difference, it's extremely disappointing, especially from all the reviews saying "OH I WENT FROM A 670 TO 980 AND THIS THING CAN RUN ANYTHING IT GOES THROUGH AT ULTRA WOW PLEASE BUY", reading a bunch of those I though the upgrade would be fairly good on my performance. I'm just confused to why it isn't and my first thought was because I was getting bottle necked.

What is your FPS in these games?

And every one of the games you mentioned are old, and are either poorly ported or poorly threaded. For their time, that was normal, but not so today. If you only wanted to improve your old games, you made a mistake, but for new games, it should show a lot of improvement.

Ok, my fps in crysis with everything ultra is 50 to a fast dropping 30, dayZ is 20 - 40, and gtaIV is 30 - 56. Ok I do seem like a drama queen but I have a personal liking for 60fps, and I thought the 980 would deliver. I will give info on Crysis 3, far cry 4, and lichdom battlemage with info. I will be back!

Crysis just can't be played with MSAA x8. Drop it to x2 or x4 and post back results. And ignore the aircraft carrier level. DayZ is built with Arma, if I'm not mistaken, which is just the absolute worst performing online game ever made. You can ignore that one. GTA4 is also a known port problem, so you can also not expect a lot from that.

Crysis 3 and Farcry 4 might be better examples, but you aren't likely going to get massive FPS with a single card, as they are very demanding, but they will see massive improvements over the 660.

Ok, Far Cry 4 cannot be launched at all, instantly crashes. Crysis 3 can be play at ultra 60fps with vsync and smaa x4, pretty impressive looking, and for some reason I can no longer player Lords of the Fallen due to the fact that the game stutters every second REALLY HARD making it impossible to play. Trying really hard to fix far cry 4 right now and hoping to play some lichdom battlemage
