Frustrating Apartment Internet Connection

I recently moved into a new apartment building. When I asked the landlord about how we go about connecting to the free internet connection, he said I just need to plug into the Orange colored Ethernet Jack in the living room. But that doesn't make sense to me. I have a cable modem/router combo (NetGear N600 WiFi Cable Modem Router, model C3700... to be exact) so I thought it would not work. I decided to just plug the modem into the port using an Ethernet cord. Well, it too forever to get a somewhat okay connection. But it is not working properly, meaning that some websites don't load, YouTube wouldn't even load a 144p video, and it was just all around bad. The free internet is 100 Mbs, so I know it's not the speed. I have a coaxial port in my office, so I decided to plug it into that port instead. Now the speeds are far more up to par of what they should be. But here's also where it's confusing and frustrating. Speedtest does not work, as it can not connect to a server. My Samsung smart TV does not connect to the internet. But with my phone, YouTube videos work fine and my Chromecast is working fine too. I'm pretty sure the orange port in the living room is a WAN port, but my router doesn't have a WAN input. I'm pulling out my hair trying to figure this problem out. Any help would be great!

P.S. I apologize if anything I said doesn't make sense, please don't be afraid to ask for any clarifying information.

It is extremely surprising you can get the coax to work on some random port. Most time you must authorize the cable modem with the ISP.

Hooking a lan port to the wall jack can cause trouble for everyone if you do not have your router configured to coexist. The DHCP server as well as the lan ip address will likely conflict. It also it not a real good idea since your equipment now is on the same lan as everyone else.

If you want to test the jack just plug a pc in directly.

I would buy a router with a ethernet wan port
