I just restarted a game where I fell radically behind by the 650 BC.

At this time the Sioux has taken one of my cities with three veteran
archers. They just finished the Spinx two turns ago and are
transitioning govornements now. Each coastal city already has a
harbor and each city has one spearman except Bear Butte which has two
and one town with some small boat. this was all done in the time I
could barely create nothing but three cities and one additional
settler and one warrier. I was playing USA.

Looking over the map, I see what might have contributed. The cities
of the Sioux are surrounding his capital where my capital is out on a
penensula so my cities get further and further out. I just don't have
any production or growth. It takes 30 to 60 turns just to create a
settler. I don't know what the handicap is for a Warlord level, but
it seems pretty steep after playing the Chieftan level last night.

I think my biggest handicap is really that I have played the regular
C3C so long I developed a routine of play that is counter productive
in RAR. I need to learn what to build first and how to plan my
building so I can produce settlers and defenders and attackers and
produce wonders all in the most effecient time allowed.

Sorry for venting here. I just gotta get used to this new forum of
the game. It is definitely more challenging and rewarding than the
vanila C3C.

I was going to complain about the way the game plays but I the more I
look at it, the more I belive it is really about how I play. lol.

Well, now that my blood pressure is down, I am going to try again. I
think this time I will be saving more often. 😉

Make sure you look things up in the civpedia. Many things are
different. For instance it takes 3 food instead of two per citizen.
You can irrigate hills if needed. You can plant a forest and then put
a mine on top of that. You really need to study the civpedia to find
out what is best for each city.

Starting position does make a difference. I was a bit behind in my
first RAR game too. Once I got some cities with decent food and
production I was able to start catching up.

The difference in levels is pretty big. I was winning at Chieftain
pretty constantly when I moved to warlord and I still got my butt
kicked.

You have a handicap over the AI until Regent. After that level the AI
gets the handicap.

There are so many choices you can make your ideal Civ. One thing I
notice about RAR/DYP is that AI Civs are no longer equal. I have seen
them go on rampages and conquer entire continents.

I think the human player has the advantage in RAR. There are so many
choices the AI has a better chance at making the wrong one.

I am getting beat regularly but am still enjoying this mod.

After writing the message below, I started a new game. In the game
below, I started between desert and tundra with a number of mountains
around. A few hills and very little grass and plains. I was on a
thin peninsula with mountains and volcanoes mostly. Since my capital
was at one end, the rest of my cities were further and further away
until I reached the plains and grassland of the Sioux. The game I
played last night set me up in the middle of a large plains and grass
area with a ridge of hills and mountains. I was able to maximize
production and grow more rapidly than the last game.

Rome took an entire continent that was about half the world but I
maintained enough lead on technology to take the diplomatic victory in
a little over 6 hours :)

Things went so much faster that I had to start a new game just far
enough to see if the "Accellerated Production" option was checked. It
was not.

However, I did learn a little more about the strategy of studying
science advances. I no longer focus on a science far away until I
have reached the filled in most of the lesser ones. Most of them seem
to have good reason to learn.

This is true in Vanilla CIV as well as RAR: I don't think the
govornor listens well to its instructions. I put it on maximum
production but no matter the setting, it persues growth and appears to
be the same no matter the setting.

It likes to replace mines with irrigation whenever possible and I hate
to use the non-destructive automatic mode with my workers as it is
often necessary. I also build lots of workers as quickly as
reasonable since that is where I get a lot of strength. i like the
more effecient workers in RAR very much. It is nice to upgrade them
to get better production from them.

I noticed that clearing forests and marsh seems further away in
technology.

Needless to say, I did a lot of reading in each available technology
when I completed one. I also noticed that many techs can be obtained
in as few as one turn. This makes tech growth rapid. I am now sure
to whose benefit it is to make the tech growth slow or fast, but I had
several wonders complet and expire within a few turns.

Govornments: Boy, what a change!

For What its Worth,

Buck

If you get terrain like that, restart.
