"Spamming is defined as posting identical or nearly-identical messages
(not just ads, although ads are usually what spammers post) to a lot of
newsgroups, one right after the other. Since it's really not that
difficult to write a program that will post the same advertisement to
dozens, if not hundreds or thousands of newsgroups, a lot of people
have taken to doing this."

While officaly one may call a single ad "off topic" and many ads "spam"
I would argue that the term "spam" does apply to the newsgroups in the
exact same way that bulk e-mail is refered to as spam. But given that
people get confused and call a single e-mail "spam" even if it wasn't a
bulk mail, I can see where someone without a background in the meaning
of these woulds would misuse it in either case.

Thanks for the clarifaction. I was incorrect to say that spam only
related to email.
However, according to your posted definition, the post in question does
not fit the description of "spam", correct?

As usual, you're confused. Spam refers to email and this is a news group.
Big difference.
Take your meds.

I refuse to pass judgement on this issue. To be fair i'd have to do
some research into this person's posting, and i'm too lazy. And i'm
not so much of a nick-pick that I would employ my time over an issue
that I consider to be hair splitting. Call it spam if you like, call
it off topic if you like. It's no more or less accurate than
describing an unwanted e-mail as spam even though it's impossible for
the end user to judge how many people actually got the same or similar
copy.

If you want my judgement - you both were wrong - not only semantically
but in the fact that this tree, my self included is 100% off topic. At
least the parent's topic was at least related to printers, though
should be reserved for the misc.forsale.printers group. In this case,
it's my judgement that we are all foofoo heads and should sit in the
corner and be ashamed. Case dismissed

Without getting into a diatribe, the poster appears to have only posted
to this ng.
