What's the deal with this one? Was it that bad?

Not really. The engine was advanced for it's day. The problem is that
during development the original plot and engine were abandoned dashing the
hopes of a legion of fans who wanted a true sequel to the previous games.
Instead we got Ultima Tomb Raider.

Still it's an interesting game if you have no preconceptions.

IIRC one of the major problems was that it only ran well on 3DFx's
boards, ie. the Glide-API version was more optimized than the
"non-Glide" version. This was fixed in later patches, but the damage
to the reputation was done.

Oh, and as others pointed out, it didn't play like a Ultima game.

Depends on hardware. U9 runs fine on PIII-800 (i815 chipset), GeForce 2MX
and 256MB RAM. In D3D mode for sure.

Nevertheless, the same U9 in Glide mode had by far lower hardware
requirements, and the above mentioned configuration was very advanced at the
time of U9 release (1999). It was already not-so-advanced in 2000, it was
"normal".

So, lots of people tried U9 in D3D mode on hardware worse then above
mentioned like Riva or such, and it is really bad on such hardware. Thus the
reputation.

An optimist.

The game is a waste of a good storage disk even if it would run perfectly on
a C-64.

The hardware problems just made it the most complete failure of our time.

Daikatana is Hall of Fame material in comparison.

You'd disagree with the assessment? 🙂
