FS2K4 performance and hardware dilemma

Hi there simmers,

I am pretty happy with FS2K4 on my gaming rig right now, but as time passes
and I hear all those kids around me with faster machines, I wonder what
would be a reasonable next purchase. I haven't bought anything for months,
so don't tell me to wait for the next generation...

I use a 9800XT 256 MB and a P4 2.6C (northwood) which overclocks
beautifully over 3 GHz btw, but since I like to keep my room silent, I
watercool my CPU and GPU, and run both at factory settings. Mobo is Abt's
IC7, with 2x512 MB Corsair RAM.

Since I am getting a 1600x1200 TFT monitor soon, I'll need more power to
play at this resolution... Would a 3.4 GHz Prescott with some light
overclocking bring me anymore fluidity in the game ?

Is there anyone in here who thinks that FS2K4 would benefit more of a new
gfx card than of a new CPU (provided I can find an X800 pro/XT AGP) ?

I know the next move will be new mobo, new CPU, new gfx card, new RAM, but
for now I am upgrading just one component.

Any suggestions ?

Lorenzo

You might get better info on: alt.games.microsoft.flight-sim

Yes. The two biggest performance-killers for FS2004 are high-res
textures on AI planes and heavy weather: the former needs lots of video
RAM, the latter needs lots of fill-rate... anything else is far less
important.

That's hard to answer not knowing if you've fully tweaked what you have. I would take some time and explore all the
suggestions for tweaking your machine that have been posted here and at alt.games.microsoft.flight-sim. Once you've
learned what you can from that you can upgrade. I'd go CPU first as that is 'usually' where the bottleneck is. I've
been hearing nothing but nice things about the X800 though.

As far as the latency tweak it seems that Powerstrip works best with the ATI cards. Some nVidea users are getting a few
more FPS but not all.
