Hey guys, I wanna ask whether my PSU will support a new GTX 670 card. On its +12V rail, the ratings are:

+12V1 @ 14A

+12V2 @ 16A

+12V3 @ 18A

the recommended power supply for GTX 670 is 500W and at least 38 Amps on the +12V rails. What does that mean?

Thanks in advance 😀

Which CPU model did your system come with?

Core i7-3770
Core i5-3330
Core i3-2120

NVIDIA's PSU power requirements are based on an Intel Core i7-920 CPU which draws at least 2 Amps more from the +12V rail than the Core i7-3770 in the list of CPUs above.

I would say your current FSP500-70EP should have no problem powering your system with an ASUS GeForce GTX 670 Direct CU II TOP 2 GB.

BF3 would be the most GPU intensive of the games you've listed. When playing it at a resolution of 1920x1080 at its highest visual settings a GeForce GTX 660 Ti should give you at least 60 FPS. The ASUS GeForce GTX 670 Direct CU II TOP 2 GB would give you at least 74 FPS.

I would recommend the ASUS GeForce GTX 670 Direct CU II TOP 2 GB since games...

For a system using a single GeForce GTX 670 graphics card NVIDIA specifies a minimum of a 500 Watt or greater power supply that has a combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 30 Amps or greater and that has at least two 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Where did you get the 38 Amp requirement from, for the GeForce GTX 670?

For a system using a single GeForce GTX 660 Ti graphics card NVIDIA specifies a minimum of a 450 Watt or greater power supply that has a combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 24 Amps or greater and that has at least two 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

"When it comes to power, ASUS has retained the NVIDIA reference design requirements and included a an 8+6 pin power connector layout for the GTX680 and a 6+6 pin power connector layout on the GTX 670. ASUS recommends a 500W power supply for the GTX670 and a 550W power supply for the GTX680. Both power supplies should have at least 38Amps on the +12V rails."

about 3/4 page down

So would you recommend the 670 or 660 Ti, the price difference in my area is around $40-$60

Too bad LegitReviews.com didn't actually measure the card's actual power consumption.

Since the ASUS GeForce GTX 670 Direct CU II TOP 2 GB is factory overclocked and ASUS states a Maximum Graphics Card Power of 180 Watts, and techPowerUp.com measured the actual power consumption at 177 Watts during gaming in their review of that specific card, the minimum +12V @ 30 Amps that NVIDIA specifies for the PSU is correct.

+^1 Agreed!

I see, so my PSU would be able to support the 670 right? Would it be close, I mean is there any chance my system would auto shut down when stressing the card i.e playing games?

And would you recommend a 660 Ti or 670?

What are the rest of the components in your computer system? Need to know this to determine what the total power draw on the +12V rail will be.

If your system is a consumer desktop computer like an Acer, Compaq, Dell, HP, etc. then list its model number.

Recommending a 660 Ti or 670 will depend on the games you play. List the games.

I have a Acer Aspire M3985

Games I play include:

Modern Warefares 2 4 6
BF3
Star Craft II
Red Alert III
Burnout Paradise

and probably some MMORPGs not planning to play yet but might in the future, still searching for some good ones 😀
