FTP help

Hi Guys, I have windows 7 and im trying to setup Windows FTP on my PC (192.168.0.3)

Ive Installed ( In Turn Windows Features on or off ) :
IIS - FTP Exstensibilty/FTP Service and The Web Managment Tools.


Ive Created a folder for the use of the FTP in D:\home2

In My IIS Manager, under sites, I created a new FTP Server called "Home2" .

"Home2" Settings :
FTP Authentication = Basic Enabled
FTP Authorisation = Allow User - Paul / Permissions - Read/Write
FTP SSL Settings = Allow Connections
FTP Directory Browsing = MS-DOS
FTP User Isolation = FTP Root Directory


My Windows Firewall is disabled automatically and
Im using Norton Internet Security 2012.

In general Rules -

1. Ive allowed Incoming/Outgoing connections to and from other computers
2. Allowed Computers : 192.168.0.3
3. Allowed Local & Remote TCP Protocol - ftp port 21


In My router Ive port forwarded Port 21 / TCP / 192.168.0.3.


When I try to access ftp:\\192.168.0.3 from my browser I get : Authenticaion Required.
I type my username and password and Im granted access to the test files in the folder.


When I try accessing via my public ip **.***.***.***:21
I get : authenticaion required. I type My Username and Password

Then nothing happens and I get " The Connection Timed Out"

When this happens, In home2 FTP Settings\FTP Current Session I get

Username : *pcname*\Paul
Client IP **.***.***.***
Session Start Time : ****
Current Command : LIST
Previous Command : CWD
Bytes Sent : 283
Bytes Received : 64
Session ID : *****

Why cant I connect remotely ?

The FTP protocol uses more ports than just port 21 by default. In order to connect from the Internet use an FTP passive connection.

Thanks for the response.

The thing is, I asked a friend to try and he can connect to the ftp from his house and access the files.
But I cant connect to the FTP from the same machine hosting the FTP using my public ip, but can using my private IP.

Of course you can't!

Your router does not forward connections backwards into your LAN. Inside your LAN you MUST use the private IP address.
