FTP Problem: WindowsXP seems unable to transmit password

I am switching to a new computer...WinXP Home. I can access my ftp site
anonymously. I cannot access the site using a password. The identical
software configured
in an identical way on my old computer, WinXP Professional (still connected
to the my network
and to the Internet) works just fine. It is as if XP is corrupting the
password I type in. FTP site acts as if it is getting a wrong password.
Thinking it might be the FTP software, I downloaded and installed another
FTP client with the same results. I've Googled the subject and find lots of
similar complaints but no suggestions of what might be happening. Anyone
able to shed light on this?

If you are using a router, or firewall, in between your FTP client and the
FTP web site, you will need to set up the FTP client to use the firewall
access/ PASV ftp mode. Active FTP mode may cause problems where the ports
may be blocked and/or data corruption.

Thank you. I tried changing to Direct Passive, but it did not solve my
problem. I even tried turning off the Windows Firewall. That did not help
either. It is a mystery still.

If anyone has other ideas I would appreciate hearing them.
