FTP server on Synology DiskStation - HELP

Hello,
I have a Synology DiskStation NAS, Running DSM5.1. I'm having a hard time configuring it for an FTP server. I need to be able to transfer complete folders with subfolders and multiple files, within them. I am able to mount a shared folder on the LAN, but can't seem to get the hang of it, to do the same over the internet.
It would be a real help If I could get a comprehensive tutorial, to set up & configure WebDAV, or whatever other FTP service can do what I need. I'd like to use an easy FTP client, or better yet, the Windows Explorer in my Win7, Win8 And XP, computers connected to the internet.

Any network gurus up to the challenge?

Have you read the Synology knowledge base articles?
WebDAV (DSM 4.x but 5.x should be similar)
FileStation
FTP

Yup, read all those, to no avail.. Users are complaining on the Synology forums that after upgrading the DSM, FTP access stopped working. I started out with the latest DiskStation Manager, so I'm at a disadvantage. Looking for possible third party solutions..

If there isn't an answer on the Synology forums, then your probabilities are pretty low....
