How would 1920x1080 resolution look like on a 2k monitor ? im planning to buy a 2k monitor, and in case some game wont be optimized properly (as they usually are) for higher resolution, i was wondering how would it look like in full hd? would it look as bad as 720p on a full hd monitor ?

Solution
Never reduce reslution to increase the graphics settings, that's a general rule that applies to almost all games.

If I had a 295X2, I'd get that monitor because it seems to be the sweet spot of price, features, and performance.

One last piece of advice is to be careful because ASUS is known for it's great products and bad customer service. I only buy ASUS because the warranty is provided by my local retailer and I don't have to deal with them directly.

It is always best to run the native resolution of the monitor for the best picture. THe picture quality always suffers when running non native resolutions. The extent of how bad will depend on the monitor. Most modern games (games in the last 10 or so years) will work just fine at the higher resolutions.

hmm that sucks ass ;/ i dont trust new games on higher resolutions. i think all games are shit and unoptimized. i really want to go for it, but i was hoping i could switch to 2k, or full hd without any loss of quality you know.

Not sure why you don't trust new games at higher resolutions. I play all my games at 4k with little to no problems at all. 1440P is even better and more common, and most if not all PC games are made for that resolution going forward.

If you don't trust it for whatever reason that might be. I would say stick with the 1080P monitor.

because you have to spend 2k+ to play on 4k? and thats just for games that are out right now. in a year and a half you probably wont be able to game on 4k on new games

wait which has better image quality (higher resolution) ? 1440p or 2k ?

1280x720 is HD (or 1366x768 on PCs)
1920x1080 is Full HD or FHD (1.5 x HD)
2560x1440 is Wide Quad HD or WQHD (2 x HD. Why is it prefixed with Wide since it's the same ratio as HD?)
3840x2160 is Ultra HD or UHD (3 x HD aka broadcast 4K, cinematic 4K is larger)

Your card may not be able to hit ridiculous frame rates using uber ultra settings on games when using WQHD, but dropping those settings will still provide an enjoyable game.

It depends on the monitor. But I also think using the native resolution is best in almost all cases. Whether you would need to decrease the graphics quality or not depends on your specs. If you would share your system specs, I'm sure many people will be able to help you further

now, i havent bought a monitor yet. i have a 1920x1080 tn panel 60hz led backlit lcd monitor from a budget pc. and i want to upgrade to 144hz. but i was thinking, instead of spending 600 euros on a good ips 144 hz full hd monitor.. why not go for Asus MG279Q 27" which is 600 euros, 2k,144 hz,ips... you know?
and in case games will have a horrible optimization, as it happens too often, i could just switch to full hd and not have a problem. but my friend told me it decreases quality by a mile

i know that :p i was just unsure about 1440p and 2k. i dont know which one is better

i suppose 1440k is a bit worse than 2k, since 2k is 1600p as far as i remember. just a smaller resolution

hey guys, when youre sitting about 70 cm from your monitor, would 27" be bad for you? i mean, when you look really close to your monitors you see pixels etc. would that be the case with a 27" monitor ? all i care about is image quality. would that look bad ?

Heck, I have a 23" FHD monitor and can't see any individual pixels no matter how close I get. 600 euros should get you a pretty decent monitor. The one you suggested isn't bad also and it supports FreeSync. Just be sure to read the customer reviews on Newegg because there seems to be a slight blurring issue with FreeSync on this particular monitor.

If I were you, I wouldn't even care what the refresh rate of the monitor is because you'll be running in FreeSync mode and the 295X2 is basically a powerhouse and will run most games with very demanding settings @1440p.

You can read TH's review of that particular monitor http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/asus-mg279q-27-inch-freesync-monitor,4262.html

the only thing i hate is if my rig wont run some game on 2k, i wont really be able to switch to full hd.. and another thing i hate about high resolution monitors is that you need to really spend A LOT if you want a very good one.

but thank you youssef for your help. i dont really get what free sync/g sync is. i thought it was just a feature that removes screen tearing. what does it have to do with fps :p?

These technologies have an optimum range of FPS for them to work best.

If I understand you correctly, you want more FPS for your games to feel smoother. FreeSync or G-Sync remove screen tearing and stuttering as well. So, playing a game feels smooth even on lower FPS. For this specific monitor, the range is 35-90 FPS. You will also need to set the max refresh rate of the panel to 90 Hz. The Tom's Hardware review linked in my previous message has all the details you would need to know. As for your setup not being able to handle 1440p gaming. I seriously doubt that because your graphics card is quite powerful. In the future you might need to decrease some details but that's how it is with technology. The details you decrease might not even be noticeable to you except if you compare screenshots

Also, you will be able to switch to 1920x1080 but I can't guarantee the image quality. It's the same aspect ratio as 1440p so it should be OK.

I think you underestimate the 295X2, checkout The review for the 980Ti and see the performance for yourself.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-ti,4164-4.html

Also, DX12 will give you a performance boost so don't worry

Haha i understand the hardware bro :) its the monitors that bother me. I would be better off and a lot more happy with a 2k monitor, but everyones telling me about how the image quality becomes absolute shit when you switch to lower resolutions than a native of x monitor.. I just dont know what to do.

Thank you for your help

hmm. ok thank you very much. looks like everyone is telling me the same thing, so ill just listen to smarter people ^^

1 more thing. considering how expensive 144hz monitors are, do you mind recommending me some 60 hz 2k ips monitors ? with high ppi preferably, and if youre bothered could you also maybe recommend me the same thing but with a 144 refresh rate? id like to compare them 2.. i really want to buy a 2k monitor, and i suppose ill also invest in some 144hz full hd panel just in case
